This pair named “MAMA TORTUGA” for all the guidance and wisdom of the turtle, honu, tortuga. In every language I’ve learned, in every culture I’ve experienced, turtle medicine is potent. In the sweat lodge, the turtle was a guide for how we built the sweat, how we arranged the rocks, the shell alone was an immense amount of information even about the timing and seasons of life. Hawaiians have communicated with these wise animals and understood their medicine for thousands of years. My Grandma Mary used to have a turtle figurine of some kind in every room and said it was for keeping the peace, and I should do the same. Yesterday as I went to the ocean to let go of some grief I’d been hanging onto for too long, my family saw a turtle and called me into the water as I stood at the edge unsure of myself, I was so deeply reminded of the medicine mama tortuga shares with us and thankful for it, in all its forms through all the legacies and traditions.
